Bitter-sweet reaction over Aids award

Mak Kwok-fung, a Wan Chai District councillor and former legislator, had mixed feelings when he was honoured again for his volunteer service for Aids victims. In a press statement yesterday, he recalled an unhappy encounter in his district council election campaign last year. “I mentioned my volunteer work with the Hong Kong Aids Foundation in my publicity materials. My T-shirt was emblazoned with the message of, ‘Care for Aids’. I got hostile responses. Some people shouted at me and said, ‘Go to hell’. It’s very sad that discrimination against people infected with HIV is still serious in society after so many years.”

Mr Mak expressed gratitude that he was still on the award list, although he is spending less time on Aids volunteer work because of other engagements.
